The App Review: Locavore
What it says it does: Locavore is the easiest way to find local, in-season food. Pinpoint nearby farmers' markets & farms that sell the products you love. Discover seasonal recipes. Share it all on Facebook.
What it actually does: The Locavore app connects its users with local farmers markets, community supported agriculture (CSAs), seasonal recipes, lists of what’s in season, and other local locavores. Two great features are the lists of what’s in season in your area and the seasonal recipes. The “In Season” feature shares what’s “peaking” in season and tells the user how many weeks or months there are left of that particular produce item as well as what’s “currently” in season and of course what’s “coming’ in season soon. There’s nothing like knowing broccoli will be in season in two weeks! As for the seasonal recipes, how does honey-baked black mission figs with orange and ginger sound, or grilled mahi-mahi with avocado-melon salsa…
How useful is the information for target audience?: The information is great for those who want to know what’s in season in their area or current location if they are traveling. The one stop shop for what’s in season, where to get it and how to use it – very useful!
Ease of use: The app is fairly easy to use. After setting up a basic account and allowing the app to access your area or a target area, you’ll be on your way to knowing what’s fresh to eat.
Who would best benefit from the app: The app is great for anyone looking to include more produce local or not into their diet. With recipes and the what’s in season search, users can’t go wrong – and if they are unsure about a specific produce item, Locavore includes the Wikipedia link so users learn as they go.
