The App Review: Good Fish Guide

Each week we review a food related app. This week it’s Good Fish Guide from the Marine Conservation Society – find out what the Lempert Report thought.

September 16, 2016

What it says it does: The definitive guide to sustainable seafood from the Marine Conservation Society (MCS). This App tells you which fish are good to eat, along with some suggested recipes for cooking them, and which should be avoided based on whether they come from well-managed, sustainable stocks or farms, or not. MCS has also rated many restaurants and cafés that serve seafood allowing diners to make informed choices.

What it actually does: In line with the traffic light system used on packaged foods, this UK based app also uses the simple red, yellow and green to rate fish; so users can see at a glance what’s sustainable and good to eat. Rated from 1 to 5, 1 and 2 are ok to eat (green) and 5 is avoid (red). The reasoning behind each species rating is explained in detail helping shoppers better understand their options and choices – and also helping shoppers avoid contributing to exploiting fish stocks. The app also features creative sustainable fish recipes of the month, so users will never get bored cooking their sustainable fish choices.

How useful is the information for target audience?: The app is especially great for those based in the UK, and surprisingly useful here in the US as well, with easy to understand ratings, recipes, and great information on over 100 species of fish. The restaurant finder wont apply here in the US

Ease of use: The app is very user friendly, with simple functions and an easy search, shoppers and restaurant goers will be learning all they need to know about the best choices in fish in no time!

Who would best benefit from the app?: Anyone who wants to make the best choices when choosing fish, contributing to their personal health and the health of the oceans.
