Happy 2014! Welcome to Food News Today!
New Year, New You.
Well it's the New Year and with that… a chance to set some new goals! According to Forbes Magazine, approximately 40% of Americans make New Year’s resolutions. And one of the most popular resolutions is diet & weight loss. But guess what? Only about 8% actually keep them. So if you’re making resolutions this year, my advice? Forget about fad diets, just focus on being healthy. And, make your resolutions tangible. A realistic resolution is a good resolution!
And speaking of resolutions, a good one for new parents this year, ‘give your kid a normal name!”. Parenting website “Babycenter”, rounded up the most unusual names for 2013, some of the standouts? “Panda”, “Phone” and my personal favorite…
“Cheese”!! Go figure…
Highlights from 2013 New Product Reviews:
From cereal to cane sugar to salads, in 2013 I reviewed some great, and well, not so great, products. If you missed them, don’t worry! Let’s take a look back and check out some of the highlights:
2013 saw two top products receive a whopping 98! First, Barbara’s Organic, Snackimals Cereal – Cinnamon Crunch. Delicious bears and elephant shaped clusters of corn and oat flour with cinnamon for flavor. A perfect, healthy cereal for kids and adults.
And also with 98 - Numi Organics Savory Tea, Garden Sampler. Forget your typical lemon or green tea, these vegetable flavors open up a whole new category of tea which may require you to push your boundaries, but you’ll be grateful you did! My favorites were Tomato Mint and Spinach Chive, and you’ll love them all!
The next highlight from 2013, with a score of 97, was Zulka; Morena Pure Cane Sugar. With a slight honey flavor this pure cane sugar is made by squeezing the sugar cane and evaporating the juice. Put away the artificial sweeteners, with one packet at just 16 calories, this cane sugar is all you’ll need.
Then there was the Flax n’ Chia Stix. I gave this product a 96. These convenient little packets can be carried anywhere and sprinkled on anything from salads to eggs. It’s a really clever way to add protein, fiber and omega 3 fatty acids to your diet.
Now if you watch my New Product Reviews, you’ll know that unfortunately not everything is a hit. The lowest scoring product for 2013, with just 66, was Lean Cuisine’s Salad Additions, Asian-Style Chicken Salad with Sesame Ginger Vinaigrette. Why you ask? Well, it was a lot of work to get it all together and unfortunately the chicken was rubbery with not much flavor. But, there’s always room to improve and with a brand new year ahead of us, we look forward to seeing something new from Lean Cuisine in 2014! The Taste Simulator
Ever watch TV or flick through a magazine and see images of food that just makes your mouth water? Well what if you could actually taste them?! Virtual tasting? Might not be as crazy as you think!
Researchers at the National University of Singapore have developed a digital taste simulator. It works by putting two thin metal slabs in your mouth --one placed on top of the tongue, the other underneath -- sending alternating currents and tricking your taste buds into thinking you've eaten something delicious.
Lead researcher, Nimesha Ranasinghe, told The Telegraph, “thus far salty, sour, and bitter sensations have been successfully generated.”
Beyond using the device for entertainment, researchers hope it will have a health benefit. Diabetics, for example, might be able to use the taste synthesizer to simulate sweet sensations without harming their actual blood sugar levels and also researchers hope cancer patients could use it to improve or regenerate a diminished sense of taste during chemotherapy.
The research team is currently working on the simulator being able to create smell and texture, and also a working on a smaller version that can fit on a stick, like a digital lollipop.
