Ratings Criteria

With over 50,000 products in the average supermarket, people don't have the time, or the money, to test every product on the shelves and with 15,000 new products every year consumers need to know what's out there!

So Phil does the testing and the tasting for you and gives the product a rating out of 100 so you know what you can expect when you try something new!

SupermarketGuru does not sell the foods we review, nor receive any compensation from the manufacturers for reviewing or rating them.

Phil taste-tests and judges each product based on the following 8 criteria:

  1. (30 points) Taste: The most important attribute of any food
  2. (20 points) Value: Is it worth it?
  3. (15 points) Health: Based off the nutritional information, is it nutritionally balanced?
  4. (15 points) Ingredients: What's in it, how natural is it?
  5. (5 points) Preparation: When applicable, how accurate or good are the directions *
  6. (5 points) Appearance: Is it appetizing and does it resemble its photo or description
  7. (5 points) Packaging: Is it appropriate for the product and does it have any benefits such as resealability, added freshness, better storage, etc.
  8. (5 Points) Sustainability: Is the packaging biodegradable, is it wasteful, is the company endeavoring to offset their carbon footprint?

* products that do not have any preparation will have the full value of these points included in their total score

GlutenFreeda’s Gluten-Free Burrito

This product is a HIT! If you are looking for a gluten-free microwave burrito, check out GlutenFreeda’s. In just 3 minutes you will have a satisfying snack. There is a little less chicken than I would like, (although it is all white meat and very tasty), and far too few red bell peppers, corn and cheese. But with just 227 calories and 6g of fat this is a terrific small lunch or snack. I also wish that it had a little bit more zip. Retails for $2.99 – 3.29.

Sheffa Salad Sprinkles Mediterranean Flavor

91
This product is a HIT! If you like to add crunch to your salad, pick up Sheffa Salad Sprinkles. This is a very nice mix of almonds, cashews, soybeans, chickpeas and seeds. It does have 10g of fat in just 1 ounce, but it adds a great source of protein to your salad or vegetables. This is a great recipe of ingredients, unlike so many of the nut toppings that have way too much salt or sugars added to them. Retails for $4.35.

Trop50 Pomegranate/Blueberry

Trop50’s new Pomegranate/Blueberry has an interesting flavor. While the pomegranate and blueberry taste does come through, this is a blend of apple juice, pomegranate juice, grape juice, blueberry juice and natural flavors. It is only 45% juice which is why it is less than half the calories and half the sugars of some of the other juices. It does contain 100% of the RDA of vitamin C. Retails for $3.59.

Naked 100% Coconut Water

This product is a HIT! Well now it looks like coconut water has gone mainstream. When I first started reviewing coconut waters people would crinkle up their noses, but not anymore. Naked has made it official - it is not a fad! Coconut water is a healthy and tasty drink. If you have not tried coconut water, please do! But make sure it is 100% coconut water with nothing added. It replenishes potassium and other electrolytes as well as having 65mg of calcium. Athletes have used coconut water as a natural sports drink for decades. One recommendation though, be sure to drink it when it is cold, otherwise you will crinkle up your nose. Retails for $1.99.
