It’s during times like this when we discover just how important life and other people’s futures really are. As countries continue to second-guess each other, it’s nice to walk into a food store and feel safe, welcome and a bit of
camaraderie. And that’s exactly what happened to a group of us this past Wednesday at a Wal-Mart Supercenter in the New York metropolitan Area.
It wasn’t about the food. It was all about a Wal-Mart greeter who was also a veteran of World War II who was near the checkouts wishing everyone peace as he played a CD of patriotic songs. He also was “recruiting” donations for the USO (United Service Organizations).
He, and this Wal-Mart store are not alone as supermarkets throughout the US are joining forces to help make life on the front lines in Iraq a bit easier for our troops.
Some examples:
BI-LO supermarkets, headquartered in Mauldin, South Carolina, have joined the campaign and from March 30 through April 29, Operation Goodie Bag will allow BI-LO customers to help gather basic supplies to send to the troops. These basic supplies include items such as notepaper, toothpaste, hard candy, disposable cameras and postage stamps. In addition, customers can write a short note of gratitude to our service men and women.
Monetary donations will also be accepted, and BI-LO has agreed to match customer and Associate donations up to $50,000. Customers can make a $1 tax-free donation by scanning an Operation Goodie Bag card as they check out. The names of all donors will be displayed in the store where the donation is made.
Giant Food, based in the greater Washington D.C. area is soliciting $1, $3 and $5 donations to the USO at their checkouts, through vouchers that are displayed at each Giant and Super G store. These contributions will be used to help fund care packages for the troops.
