Breyers goes Organic

Published on: September 1, 2006

Breyers' all natural ice cream is going the organic route now as well. To start off, Breyers will offer organic Vanilla Bean, Chocolate, Coffee and Vanilla Fudge Swirl.

What a sign of the times. For a major brand like Breyers (part of Unilever) to jump on the organic bandwagon, long followed by specialty and premium brands, is like Kraft jumping on the environmentally sustainable boat with their Yuban Rainforest Alliance coffee. Oh wait, that just happened. And no wonder, being environment-friendly is huge! Need some proof? Well, the organic ice cream market has increased by 55% since 1997. The large demand for organic milk, and subsequent increased production, has fueled this rise in organic ice cream.

As for others with health interests, specifically the lactose intolerant - Breyers has a lactose-free vanilla. A smart move considering there are millions of lactose intolerants out there who love the taste of dairy ice cream. A one quart container of organic ice cream will sell for $4.99 - $5.99. While a 56 oz. container of lactose free will go for $5.29.
