Welcome to our new feature: Allergy Friendly where we will be featuring a recipe or product each week that is ... allergy friendly! Since joining Supermarketguru.com I've been amazed at the number of readers who are dealing with food allergies - as I am myself, so we thought it was time to introduce a page where each week we'll feature a great recipe or product for all you fellow allergy sufferers out there!
The most important habit you can adopt when confronting your own or someone else's food allergy is label awareness. It's so crucial to constantly read labels even if the packaging is assuring you that the product you've chosen is allergen free – you can never assume the food doesn't contain your particular allergic red flag until you've read the all ingredients – that's all there is to it. Food allergies are the next fad in food labeling – we've seen the fads come and go – one minute every product tells you it's "fat free" "low fat" or "no fat" and the next it's "low carb" or "no carbs" – even if the products didn't contain fat or carbs in the first place! Well, that might be a little bit of an exaggeration, but you know what I mean – stay vigilant and read those labels – even when it turns your trip to the grocery store into a 2 hour venture; it's worth it and in the long run you’ll become so familiar with your trusted brands that grocery shopping will become a fine art! This week's recipe for Pear Crumble is so yummy that I ate both portions at once straight from the oven – it can be served hot or cold – if you have some restraint ... NB: the butter can be substituted by an oil of your choice (in the same quantity) if there is a dairy allergy.
Pear Crumble Ingredients: This recipe serves 2 and can be easily double or tripled for more servings. 2 pears – peeled, cored and sliced (you can substitute apples, rhubarb or blackberries) 1 tablespoon butter to sauté 4 tablespoons water or fruit juice Agave syrup to taste 3 heaped tablespoons ground rice 3 heaped tablespoons ground almonds 1 tablespoon chilled butter diced very small 1 tablespoon Agave syrup
Pear Crumble Instructions: Pre-heat the oven to 425 degrees. Heat the pears and butter in a pan, gently sautéing. Add the Agave syrup and water or fruit juice. Cook until the fruit becomes translucent and juicy. Put in an oven proof dish and set aside while you prepare the crumble. Combine the ground rice and almonds in a bowl adding the butter and Agave syrup whilst crumbling the mixture between your fingers – don't overwork it, leave it nice and crumbly with the butter as evenly dispersed throughout the crumbs as possible. Spread the mixture evenly on top of the fruit. Bake for 12 minutes until brown and crispy and enjoy!
