Fall Holiday Decoration and Centerpiece Ideas

It’s difficult to believe autumn is here but suddenly, the leaves are turning, there’s a bite in the air, and the holidays are on their way.

While I mourn the end of summer, I do look forward to the holidays and the holiday decorating that comes with it. Of course, one says “holidays” and most people think mainly of Thanksgiving and Christmas, but don’t leave out Halloween! Halloween decorations, including colorful floral centerpieces are becoming more common and since it’s only a handful of weeks away, why not include a fun floral arrangement or some porch decorating on your list of things to do alongside the pumpkin carving and costume creations?

A fantastic idea is to use the decorative smaller pumpkins or decorative gourds that are often available in stores this time of year. You can cut off the tops and hollow them out, put in a plastic or glass container to fit, or line the insides with plastic wrap, and use the pumpkin or gourd as a lovely seasonal vase. Mums are coming into the stores in hues of burgundy, rust, pumpkin pie, and, of course, you can always find yellows and reds. Try mixing and matching these colors with a few cattails and you have an inexpensive but very stylish looking centerpiece that also lasts a long time.

Dried Indian corn and tall dried corn stalks are also fare one might find for sale in the stores this time of year. I was just putting together corn ears with deep red kernels, white speckled with kernels of blue or red and yellow, and all colors and assortments in-between. Tied together with a few strands of tinted raffia and one has an incredibly inexpensive but festive centerpiece that suits both Halloween and Thanksgiving. The tall dried cornstalks are a great porch accessory standing alongside a stuffed scarecrow or with some carved pumpkins or colorful squash set at its base. Dried chili ristras are also available and are wonderful for adding a fall harvest look to your kitchen, front door, or porch.

What I love most about these ideas is that most of them are inexpensive but look so impressive and can bring back a bit of nostalgia as well. Just let your imagination run wild and have fun!
