Eat your way to healthier locks! Find out the best foods for healthy hair here

Shop smart and focus on colorful whole foods - fruits, vegetables and good quality proteins for healthy hair. Here are some suggestions for super shiny and healthy locks - after all beauty comes from the inside!

Omega-3 rich foods like salmon and sardines, which are also rich in protein, B12 and iron - all important for getting nutrients to cells including hair follicles, as well as freshly ground flax seeds and walnuts, rich in essential fatty acids are key to strong shiny hair.

Green leafy vegetables are key to long healthy locks. Lightly steamed or sautéed spinach, broccoli and kale, are all excellent sources of vitamin A precursors, and vitamin C, needed to produce sebum; the oily substance that acts as our hair and scalp’s natural conditioner. Carrots are also a great source of beta-carotene, the precursor to vitamin A.

Eat your beans! Legumes such as lentils, lima beans and black beans provide protein as well as essential hair building nutrients like iron, zinc, and biotin. Biotin is especially necessary for luxurious locks.

Grab a handful of nuts - nuts are a great source of many beauty minerals including selenium which is found in brazil nuts, walnuts contain omega-3s and almonds contain vitamin E. All nuts also contain zinc, which is essential for hair growth and cell turnover - a.k.a. healthy skin inside and out! Oysters are also an excellent source of zinc.

Sprinkle some wheat germ on your oatmeal. Wheat germ is high in protein, as well as calcium, zinc, thiamine, niacin and other vitamins that are necessary in maintaining healthy hair and skin.

Healthy protein sources like eggs, chicken, and turkey contain the building blocks for healthy hair. A low protein diet can lead to weak brittle hair. Eggs also contain biotin and vitamin B 12, which are both beauty nutrients.

Hair is not essential for life, so when we’re eating poor quality foods our body might have just enough nutrients for maintaining our vital organs, but not enough to maintain the luster in our hair. It’s also important to chew your food well and eat while sitting down, i.e. eat mindfully. This will help the body digest and assimilate the nutrients from our food.
