Each week we review a food related app. This week it’s Is It Vegan? – find out what the Lempert Report thought.
What it says it does: Is It Vegan is a tool for anyone interested in eliminating animal products from their diet. Simply scan the UPC bar code on the package of any food or beverage product, and you'll see: Whether the product is vegan, vegetarian, or neither. Is It Vegan has information on hundreds of thousands of food and beverage products and verifies each of them using a master list containing thousands of pre-classified ingredients.
What it actually does: Is It Vegan helps you decode ingredient lists to find out where animal sourced ingredients are hiding. Scan a product and you’ll immediately get an answer. You’ll also get a summary classifying the list of ingredients and a more detailed list showing which ingredients are vegan, vegetarian, non-vegetarian, etc. After putting each ingredient into a category, Is It Vegan then decides whether the product is suitable for a vegan or vegetarian diet. You can also use the app to search individual ingredients. For example, do you know if ergocalciferol, xylitol, and carminic acid are vegan? Use Is It Vegan to find out!
How useful is the information for target audience?: The app is very useful, helping people find out if there are animal products in the ingredients that make up their foods. Now, users have the option to upload products, helping to expand the database.
Ease of use: The app is very easy to use, just scan and the information will show up. There are ads on the app and Is It Vegan says they cannot control the ads, but 25% of the ad revenue will be donated to animal rights organizations
Who would best benefit from the app?: Vegan or not, if you are interested in the origin of the ingredients of your food, you’ll enjoy Is It Vegan.
