Good news for retailers! According to a new forecast by The NPD Group, prepared food purchases from supermarkets, drug stores and other retail outlets are on the rise! Data shows that by 2022 it will grow by 10% compared to a 4% increase in restaurant visits. This latest research, entitled, “A Look Into the Future of Foodservice” also found that consumers of all ages purchase prepared foods, although for different reasons. For example, ages 35 and older are more likely than 18- to 34-year-olds to buy prepared foods for dinner, while 18 to 24 year olds prefer prepared foods for snacks, and seniors look for such items for lunch. This data should serve as a reminder to retailers to promote and enhance their prepared food departments. Retailers can offer a nutritious and more economical alternative to eating out, while at the same time appealing to the convenience that suits a busy consumer lifestyle.
