Women are usually the focus of diets and healthy eating plans; SupermarketGuru feels it necessary to point out that there are certain foods and nutrients that really resonate with men’s health. Of course, men and women require the same basic nutrients for optimal health, but here are SupermarketGuru’s shopping tips for men’s health to start the year strong!

Avocados are a great source of satisfying energy and are rich in potassium needed to regulate nerves, heartbeat and, blood pressure. In fact, avocados contain 2-3 times the potassium in bananas and are an excellent source of health promoting fats and filling fiber. Use avocados instead of mayonnaise as a spread inside a sandwich, or use chopped avocados as a garnish for black bean soup, and of course as a tasty guacamole.

Lycopene-rich foods like cooked tomatoes, apricots, spinach, kale, mangoes, berries, and watermelon can provide a potent antioxidant that helps combat free radicals as well as protect against prostate cancer. Foods that contain lycopene are also rich in other carotenes that are important for good health.

Fiber, both insoluble and soluble, is important for many aspects of men’s health. Most importantly, promoting regularity and binding toxins as well as used cholesterol, preventing re-absorption in the gut. Fiber helps us feel fuller longer and provides fuel for the beneficial bacteria in our gut.

Seafood, especially oysters – are rich in zinc, which is essential for a robust immune system as well as for prostate health. Zinc is also necessary for healthy hormone levels. Pumpkin seeds and other seeds, grass-fed lamb, beef and calf’s liver are also rich sources of zinc.

Cold water fish are rich in the essential omega-3s that combat inflammation and pain, support cardiovascular health for optimal circulation and blood lipids, help balance hormones, as well as support prostate health. Examples include, wild salmon, mackerel, and sardines. Walnuts, chia and flax seeds are also great sources of omega-3s.

Nuts, full of both fiber, and minerals - this tasty and filling easy to carry snack is great for men’s health as they are an excellent source of vitamin E, a heart hero and protect our cell membranes from damage.
