Each week we review a food related app. This week it’s CalCutter – find out what the Lempert Report thought.

What it says it does: The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has developed an app for cooks from all walks of life. CalCutter allows you to enter your own recipe and intended number of servings. CalCutter will then calculate the estimated calories per serving. You can ask CalCutter to convert your recipe into a healthier dish by suggesting changes that could lower the calories.

What it actually does: CalCutter helps you create healthier recipes, by making suggestions on how to cut down on calories.  Make your family recipes healthier and you wont have to skimp on taste as celebrity chef Rocco DiSpirito has made all of the ingredient swap suggestions. You can even save the new recipes and email them to whomever you want!

How useful is the information for target audience?: CalCutter is a great app for those who want suggestions on making their recipes, and life, healthier.

Ease of use: The app is very easy to use, input your recipe, the desired servings, and CalCutter will tell you the estimated calories per serving – need to cut the calories? Use the suggested swaps and see how you slash back on calories!

Who would best benefit from the app?: Anyone looking to make healthier food, cut calories while not skimping on taste. From home cooks to restaurant chefs looking for healthy recipe suggestions, this app is a global hit.
