Each week we review a food related app. This week it’s SavingStar - Grocery Savings– find out what the Lempert Report thought.

What it says it does: Want to save money at the grocery store, but don’t have the time or desire to clip coupons? Use SavingStar to earn cash back on in-store grocery purchases at over 60,000 retail locations. There’s nothing to clip or print! You’ll earn cash back quickly with exclusive Healthy Offers and big savings on your favorite brands.

What it actually does: Use SavingStar to save money without clipping coupons. Users load their loyalty cards onto the app, and receive savings. SavingStar is able to provide rebates to shoppers shopping in stores without loyalty cards by snapping a photo of the receipt. The app features a variety of deals including the “One or Many” offers, which help shoppers save big (often $5 or more)! No need to buy all at once – users can purchase across multiple trips, and even across different stores to accumulate the minimum purchase for rebate. In addition, SavingStar encourages shoppers to eat healthy with their Healthy Offer of the Week (for example: bananas, apples, tomatoes).

How useful is the information for target audience?: The app is great for deal seekers and those who want to save some money when shopping. Some users have reported glitches with receiving the deals and customer service can get backed up, so users should be patient and save receipts to earn money back. SavingStar loads new deals every week, so users have a reason to check the app every time they shop.

Ease of use: The app itself is very user friendly and easy to use. Receiving rebates is easy and there are a variety of cash out options including direct deposit, PayPal account, or to a gift card.

Who would best benefit from the app?: Anyone who enjoys using technology to shop and save money.
