Rise and Shine--The New Way to Start Your Day

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard by now that eating breakfast is good for you! It will jump start your metabolism for the rest of the day. And it seems most Americans have clicked in and made this part of their routine, with more than 75 percent of respondents from a recent ConAgra Foods survey reporting they regularly eat breakfast at home. But now that almost everyone has jumped on the breakfast bandwagon, 2014 will bring in new ways to look at exactly what we should be eating as our first meal of the day.

To narrow down the selection, protein and whole grains will rise above the rest when looking for fuel for the day. Mintel reports that consumers are looking more at foods like eggs, meats and Greek yogurt, as well as whole grain products for their breakfast to live a healthy lifestyle without compromising taste and indulgence. In response to this new trend, brands will adjust their offerings.

Look for more brands to offer protein-rich breakfast options, like Marie Callender’s® breakfast sandwiches, a line of six sandwiches containing as much as 15 grams of protein per serving and Egg Beaters Single-Serve Cups, which contain 11 grams of protein and only 60 calories. Many cereal brands will also tout their whole grain claims on packaging, reassuring consumers that they are a beneficial breakfast option.

With breakfast on the mind during 2014, look out for brands to expand their morning meal offerings and for the category to expand. As proteins and whole grains hit the supermarkets, consumers will have a large selection to choose from this upcoming year.
