Each week we review a food related app. This week it’s Food Substitutes – find out what the Lempert Report thought.
What it says it does: The Food Substitutes app can help with anyone's cooking situation - from the moment you realize you’re out of the one ingredient that you need to finish your recipe, to dietary needs, to allergies, or more budget-friendly alternatives. Food Substitutes hopes to help any chef in any kitchen create a delicious dish that meets their needs. Currently the app has over 100 foods and over 230 substitutes with more being added all the time!
What it actually does: Food Substitutes does more than it seems. Along with the substitute possibilities for your food, there is also a Food Details tab that gives you background info for that food as well as possible tips, hints, nutritional info, or practical experience from the test kitchen and more.
Some of the food substitutes are marked as “healthier” to give you an idea of how to cut some calories, fat, or other harmful substances from your diet. You can even add your own additions to the favorites so you’ll be able to remember for the future.
How useful is the information for target audience?: The information is excellent for anyone who cooks or is new to cooking, as you might not know all of the different ways you can swap out ingredients if you are missing something or want to use something else. You could even use this app to find out more about how to shop for certain items.
Ease of use: The app is very easy to use. Browsing ingredients or searching is simple and finding substitutions and reading about all of the different swaps is a pleasure.
Who would best benefit from the app?: The app is great for a novice or even more experienced cook. Also useful for those who like to throw meals together from what they have available in their pantry.
