Whole Foods Market along with Gotham Greens is constructing a greenhouse on the roof of their new store in Brooklyn, New York.

Whole Foods Market is leading the way in fresh produce. The healthful retailer along with Gotham Greens is constructing a greenhouse on the roof of their new store in Brooklyn, New York. Whole Food says this 20,000 square foot greenhouse will be the nation’s first commercial scale greenhouse farm integrated within a retail grocery space, enabling the retailer to sell premium, pesticide-free produce year-round. Gotham Greens, a local supplier which currently provides fresh produce to retailers like Whole Foods, FreshDirect and D’Agostino’s, will design, build and operate the hydroponic greenhouse. Christina Minardi, Whole Foods Market Northeast Regional president, said in a statement: “Gotham Greens has been a valued local supplier of high quality, flavorful and fresh produce to Whole Foods Market since early 2011, making this greenhouse project a natural and extremely exciting next step in our relationship,” “We’re particularly excited to partner with a local organization with roots right here in Brooklyn and a mission in line with our own, in that we both care deeply about providing local, fresh and sustainably produced food.” Whole Foods new Brooklyn location, along with its Greenhouse, will be ready for business in fall 2013.
