Target Goes "Express"

The Lempert Report

The idea for the smaller store is to test the waters for urban expansion.

Target isplanning a 20,000-square-foot this July in its headquarters market of Minneapolis. This will be the retails giants’ smallest store yet!

The store will carry HBC, grocery, a large selection of grab-and-go foods and a pharmacy. General merchandise will include a basic selection of essential home décor and portable electronics.

The idea for the smaller store is to test the waters for urban expansion. Smaller city stores instead of sprawling suburban stores.

Walmart has already dabbled the waters here with their own Walmart Express, and Target, is making a smart move doing the same.

The smaller “express” stores, appeal to the younger, urban shopper who needs convenience, speed and reasonable prices. New checkout lane configuration services high traffic and smaller basket sizes. The fact that these Express stores will also have grab and go foods, pharmaceuticals and household goods, will make this retailer a one stop shop.

If all goes well, this should be a successful venture and I wouldn’t be surprised if we see more of these Express stores popping up.
